Lesson Plan for May 31st: 3rd teaching day

Our third teaching day at Ikamvalesizwe was mostly review and further practice of what our students did the previous day. That day, we used the WWW What=2 How=2 story writing formula to start brainstorming our own story we would write as a class.  This was our plan for the Language Arts portion:

Objective: Students will be able to write a story together using the WWW What=2 How=2 formula.

Procedure:
-Start with the WWW What=2 How=2 dance as a warm-up
-Pin up the story chart and finish the parts of the story they wrote together
-Write the story together in sentence form
-Read the story together
-Act out the story together

For further practice:
-Pin up the story "The Sly Fox"
-Read "The Sly Fox" together
-Identify WWW What=2 How=2 and underline each part in a different color

Break and transition to maths

The long-term goal for them is to identify parts in a longer story and have them write their own stories either individually or in pairs. We will also be introducing new English vocabulary words for them to practice and use in stories. The difficulties that arose for them during this lesson was that they could easily express their ideas in isiXhosa, but lacked the English vocabulary to say what they wanted.

Grahamstown

First Day at Samuel Ntsiko

Hello from Grahamstown!

These past few days have seemed so long when the end of each day approaches because it is just go-go-go (but that's what you're supposed to do when you travel, right?)but so worth it! It has been amazing thus far and up until now we have been getting to know the area, getting to know our host families, etc. Yesterday, instead of teaching, we went to both the Samuel Ntsiko and Kenton-on-Sea schools to meet the teachers and see which classrooms we will be teaching in. It was very interesting and we met so many new people who couldn't have given us a warmer welcome. At Kenton-on-Sea, we walked across the street from the school into the township to where Fundi lives to meet her mother, sister, and son. They were so sweet and it was very generous of them to welcome us into their home. Our group had a fabulous lunch on the way back and then we went back to begin lesson planning for our very first day!

I personally was pretty nervous for today but looking back, I was unnecessarily worked up! Angel is my teaching partner and we teach at Samuel Ntsiko with Julie and Victoria, with Rick accompanying us and giving us pointers when we need it. We left Miss Christine's house at 7:45 this morning and got to the school in less than ten minutes. We went to our respective classrooms and were greeted by the students with beautiful singing prayer. Angel and I did an icebreaker with the students and We all shared our names, ages, and showed off our favorite dance moves. Some of those kids can dance!!! We didn't exactly follow the lesson plan but that's to be expected, of course. We gave the students one pre-test in maths and two in English. Tonight Angel and I will grade them to determine what level we will need to begin to teach our students at. We have lots of work to do but I am really excited about it! The students loved making their name tags and enjoyed the math flash cards we gave them to do as activities. I tried to pronounce their names but they made fun of my Xhosa-speaking skills, so that's another thing on my practice list!

I think I can speak for all of us when I say that we are really excited to see what the rest of the week brings! We are trying to update the blog as much and as often as possible so keep reading!

Cities look like smoldering ashes: a plane poem.

A dark cover tarps
the ricochet of children, lovers
alley dogs and mothers.
One street lamp glares
exactly like the others:
a row of glowing choral bulbs.
They crave my fingers to pluck them,
to rub their petals
of delicate street decor
until the city erupts in sweet amber.
Ashes and ashes, sparks and dust
a holiday plate of exhausted must.
Fire berries, the tail of a dragon
or a clock's cogs with rust.
My eyes dive into the lit wicks
of oil lamps and combust!
Matchsticks and matchsticks,
gold lockers and sap,
these marigold flames burn below-
my African bonfire, my new city's map.

The Beginning

Hello Friends!!

We have arrived safely in Grahamstown after a 24+ hour journey! We all met at Goucher at 11:30 and began our trip via SuperShuttle. We arrived at Dulles and made it through security quickly. Although delayed by two hours, our first flight (7-8 hrs) to Dakar went well, besides the turbulence. From there we took an 8 hour flight to Johannasburg where we went through customs and made our connection to Port Elizabeth. Miss Christine met us at the airport and we all made the hour and a half journey to her house in Grahamstown. We got there at midnight but were still met with incredible warmth and hospitality. At Miss Christine's we ate a delicious dinner cooked by Tuki and said our goodnights; those of us not living with Miss Christine went on to meet our host families.

Grahamstown is beautiful. We met at 10 this morning and are now all drinking coffee and waiting for breakfast at Cafe Delizzia in town. After this, we are off to go school supply shopping for our classes! I think we are all excited to be here and I personally am so humbled by this opportunity. More updates coming soon!!!
